Norm of the Normals
So yesterday a friend told me to my face that I’m “not normal”. This is not the first time that someone told me that. But since it has happened yet again, it got me thinking what does it mean to “be normal”?
- Talk talk talk and talk and talk and talk - about yourself, your home, your mom, dad, bro, sis, uncle, aunt, first cousin, second cousin, school wali friend, PU wali friend, college wali friend, work friend, neighbour aunty, friend’s kid, friend’s cousin’s wife, etc. etc. etc……..
- Talk and talk - about yourself (again), your hair, your skin, your nails, your features, the threading and waxing and tweezing and manicure, pedicure, etc. etc………
- Talk and talk - about yourself (wait, we aren’t done yet?), your new pair of jeans, the salwar your brother got for you, your kurta, your kurti (there’s a difference), your one-piece party dress and how it was waaaaaayyyyy better than the partywear of every one of your friends, the poncho top you bought on amazon, the cape top you bought on myntra (again there seems to be a difference between the two), if you should get a cold-shoulder or an off-shoulder top for your…(no occasion in sight for a good 5 months)…it will be useful sometime for sure……
- Talk and talk - about the “who’s-with-who”s of the past the present and the future with such mind-blowing match-making skills when you’d predict who would be better off with who……….
- Talk and talk - about yourself (c’mon! am I stuck in a time loop now? Dormammu?), about your marriage - about what you’ll wear, how you’ll dance, your exhaustive “when I marry” wishlists, about the dowry of-your friend’s, bhabi’s, sister’s, another friend’s, yours (at this you would state how it’s a bad thing to demand for dowry, and how daughters-in-law of the same household get discriminated based on that, and how it has become a norm to give dowry even if it is not demanded, and how..you know..you can’t help but give in to the system and how your parents have everything in store for you and all, but still-it’s a really bad thing yaar..asking for dowry)
